Google Play expands the app choices
Amazon’s new Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Alexa Tablet 11 and Alexa Tablet 8 will have full access to Google Play and its downloadable apps, according to Engadget. The lineup also replaces Amazon’s Fire tablet branding with the Alexa Tablets name.
Google Play is an app store where users can download applications. Previous Amazon tablets offered only the Amazon Appstore, which Engadget describes as having substantially fewer apps. For buyers, the practical change is a broader selection of apps on the new models.
Amazon’s apps remain part of the lineup
The Alexa Tablets still run a customized version of Android, the software that runs the devices, Engadget reports. They come with Kindle, Prime Video, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Quick and Amazon Luna already installed.
The reported change therefore adds another source of apps alongside Amazon’s preloaded services. Buyers would gain Google Play access while keeping those Amazon apps available from the start.
Availability starts October 14 in North America
Engadget reports that availability begins in the United States, Mexico and Canada on October 14, 2026. The United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain follow on October 19, 2026.
For shoppers in those markets, the reported dates set the schedule for the new lineup. The central buying consideration is the expanded app selection: all three named models are reported to include Google Play access.
