Google Adds Spaces Plugin Export for Music Software, With macOS Limits

Creators can bring eligible custom instruments and effects into their music projects. Google’s guide limits the feature to macOS and excludes sample-based instruments and generative AI audio.

Spaces creations can move into music projects

Google announced on October 6, 2026, that custom instruments and effects made in Flow Music Spaces can now run in digital audio workstations, or DAWs—the software used to create and edit music. The connection uses plugins, add-ons that run inside the music software.

Google says Spaces lets creators build instruments and effects by describing what they want in everyday language, without coding experience. The new capability gives eligible creations a route into DAW projects rather than keeping their use within Spaces.

There is an important platform limit: Google’s implementation guide says Flow Music plugins currently work only on macOS.

Flow host plugins load each custom creation

Google’s documented setup starts with installing Flow Instrument and Flow Effect once. These are host plugins: they load the custom instruments and effects inside the DAW.

Each custom creation is then downloaded as a separate `.fmx` file and used through the appropriate host. That distinction matters: the workflow uses shared host plugins, rather than requiring a separate plugin installation for every creation.

Not every Spaces instrument is eligible

Google’s guide says instrument plugins currently support only standard synthetic audio. Sample-based instruments, which use recorded sounds, cannot yet be exported as plugins. Neither can anything using generative artificial intelligence audio.

A creation also must be built as a plugin to run in a DAW. If the “Use in DAW” option is missing, Google advises asking Spaces to build a Virtual Studio Technology (VST) plugin.

For creators, the practical check is straightforward: confirm macOS support, make sure the creation is plugin-compatible, and check that its audio type is eligible. The announcement opens a path into music projects, but it is not an export option for every Spaces creation.
