OpenAI Plans U.S. Test of Visual Ads in ChatGPT

The planned October test would place sponsored product and service images alongside ChatGPT image generation, expanding the company’s advertising effort.

An abstract illustration about technology and human ingenuity. Geometric forms in calm blue and warm gold. No people, text, logos, brands, realistic events, charts, numbers or claims. Clearly an illustration.

Sponsored images are planned for October

OpenAI plans to begin testing visual advertising in the United States later in October 2026. The ads would initially appear in connection with ChatGPT’s image-generation feature, according to reporting by The Verge.

The proposed format would show images of sponsored products and services. Sponsored means an advertiser has paid for the placement, making the test a new way ads could appear during an interaction that is centered on creating an image.

The test expands ChatGPT’s existing ad effort

OpenAI had already introduced ads to ChatGPT in February, The Verge reported. The new U.S. test would extend that effort into image-generation interactions rather than establish advertising in ChatGPT for the first time.

Engadget separately described the development as OpenAI testing more ads in ChatGPT. The available reports establish a planned test, not a confirmed broader release beyond the United States or beyond the initial image-generation setting.
